‘Smoke and Mirrors’ heavy on story, character building
Finished far too quickly, the newest episode of Telltale Games’ “The Wolf Among Us,” titled “Smoke and Mirrors,” brings us to a new level of character building and storytelling. The energy, both dramatic and visceral, continues from the first episode, “Faith” (read the review here), and takes us to a new level of tension and suspense.
Still bathed in a palette out of a 1980s film noir classic, “Smoke and Mirrors” takes a different tact from its predecessor: We don’t so much beat our way through the episode so much as we play detective and try to emulate Holmes in solving some heinous crimes.
In “Smoke and Mirrors,” we continue learning about our gruff protagonist, Bigby (the Big Bad Wolf). As sheriff of Fabletown and in charge of unearthing whatever evidence he can regarding multiple murders, we are given a multitude of choices to portray him as savoir or monster. The actions you take pull you along an immensely engrossing and dark story, one involving murder, mutilation, deceit and enough drama to supply a soap opera for seasons to come.

Four murderous stars out of five.
