Final chapter in Lightning’s saga goes for broke
It doesn’t take long before you get the distinct impression that Lightning has become some strange amalgamation of a Time Lord and Jesus: the savior of our souls with the ability to travel outside time and space. So… Welcome to “Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.” It only gets weirder from here.
If you weren’t already familiar with our protagonist’s history, this all may seem a bit much: Lightning, who entered a crystal stasis for many centuries after the final events of “Final Fantasy XIII-2,” is awakened an all-powerful force who seeks to use her to save what human souls she can. Her world has changed since she last saw it: Chaos has destroyed nearly everything and everyone, and Lightning has been tasked with bringing salvation to as many as she can in 13 days.
Why 13 days, you ask? Oh, because the world is going to end at that point and a new one will be born by the god Bhunivelze. And what’s a world without souls?
