LOS ANGELES — It’s wasn’t even the first true day at the Electronic Entertainment Expo here during an unusually cloudy day in downtown Los Angeles, but that didn’t stop Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft and Sony. Instead, these major video game publishers revealed a slate of titles and tech.
Monday’s major events included four pressers from the aforementioned publishers, in which they announced major game releases and developments from them or their partners. Titles and new information unveiled ranged from AAA games (“Destiny” and “Uncharted 4”) to some quirky surprises (the remastering of “Grim Fandango”) to the announcements of hands-on demos for new virtual-reality technology (Sony’s Project Morpheus). Let’s just say it was quite a day for my first foray into what is E3.
Microsoft kicked the day off with its explosive media briefing for its Xbox One and 360 systems at The Galen Center. Heavy focuses on games this year, the event started off with new footage from “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” and “Forza Horizon 2.” Other major releases included: mulitplayer footage for “Assassin’c Creed: Unity”; a stunning visual introduction for “Sunset Overdrive”; major Halo news with the announcement of “Halo: The Master Chief Collection,” which combines most former titles into one purchase, and “Halo 5: Guardians,” the latest in the popular franchise; “Fable Legends” footage; “Inside,” the sequel to the sleeper hit “Limbo”; “The Witcher 3”; “Phantom Dust”; “The Division” live gameplay footage; “Scalebound”; and “Crackdown.”
EA followed next at noon. Known for a variety of popular titles, EA’s presser held true, kicking off with footage from “Dragon Age: Inquisition” and concluding with “Battlefield: Hardline” and the news of a closed beta available first-come, first-served. (The publisher pulled off a nice bit of flair when it unveiled 64 PS4s loaded with the beta behind curtains.) Major releases and announcements included: a new “Mass Effect”; the next generation of “The SIMS”; and a slate of new sports titles, including UFC and “FIFA ’15.”
Ubisoft followed at 3 p.m., opening with a fantastic trailer for the newest release in its acclaimed “Far Cry” franchise, “Far Cry 4.” (One know you have an amazing adversary/villain when he murdered a subordinate in cold blood and then takes a selfie.) Aisha Tyler returned for her third stint hosting the presser, providing some much-needed brevity. Other major releases included: “Just Dance 2015” (I hope you aren’t sick of “Happy” yet) another new trailer for “Assassin’s Creed: Unity” (there never really can be enough). The presser closed with a bit of a surprise: the announcement of “Rainbow Six: Siege.” The live gameplay footage shown looked incredible and robust.
Sony ended the night with its briefing at 6 p.m. Opening strong with a stellar trailer for “Destiny,” there were still plenty of major titles being to talk about, including: ‘Little Big Planet 3,” which doesn’t look like it could get anymore adorable and charming; more trailers for “The Division,” “Assassin’s Creed: Unity” and “Far Cry 4” (which will likely entice a great deal of people into buying the game, especially with the news that your friend can play co-op with you — without owning the game); “Dead Island 2”; “Magicka 2”; the remastering of “Grim Fandango” (clearly a crowd favority); a brutal trailer for Suda 51’s “Let It Lie”; “ABZU”; “No Man’s Sky”; a fatalistic trailer for “Mortal Kombat X”; a new trailer for the PS4 version of “The Last of Us”; the coming of “Grand Theft Auto V” to the PS4; and a major DLC for “inFamous: Second Son,” title “First Liberty.”
Sony also announced news regarding updates to its VR set, named Project Morpheus; and major updates coming to PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now.
Of special note, Sony announced “The Rise of the Tomb Raider,” the sequel to the massively successful “Tomb Raider” reboot; a new trailer for the impressive-looking “Batman: Arkham Night”; and the crown jewel of the evening — the announcement of “Uncharted 4,” the latest chapter in the award-winning megahit franchise.
