It must be a matter of optics. Possibly because you can’t see the entire structure from any one vantage point on the ground, you can’t truly understand just how vast it spans. You get a taste when you notice the thousands of people lining up to get in. You figure it’s kind of like an amusement park: Lots may show up, but that’s neither indicative of the space available nor how long each “ride” may take.

So imagine my surprise when I first stepped into the Los Angeles Convention Center earlier this month for the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and starting coming to terms with just how cavernous this space was. And to think, from top to bottom and side to side, this building was brimming with the latest and greatest in the video game world.

Having watched previous E3s in the past via livestream, I had a basic understanding of what was going to happen: Every major publisher and developer comes to the convention to show off their coming title releases, software and hardware. Many of the exhibits provides demos or hands-on times with their wares, all in an effort to create hype and awareness. And though I was consistently awed with the experience of it all (and there was just tons to experience; seriously, I was a kid in a candy store with my mother’s money and an express checkout lane), E3 2014 proved that safe is better than sorry and that sticking with what you know may be the wisest course of action.
