‘Leo’s Fortune’ (2014) review: On a bouncy, mustachioed adventure

‘Leo’s Fortune’ a fantastically addictive side-scrolling platformer

The premise in “Leo’s Fortune” is simple enough: You try to get to the end of each side-scrolling level as intact as possible. Maybe you try to complete the side objectives (such as collecting all the coins or completing the level in a certain amount of time). It’s the journey, though, as a blue ball of fur with a rockin’ mustache that shines here.

Our bouncy hero, the wealthy Leopold, is on a journey to locate his missing gold, with him believing the theft could have been accomplished by any number of family members or acquaintances. You’ll go about doing this by controlling Leo during a series of beautiful and well-designed side-scrolling levels, using your own body to avoid the pitfalls around every hill. If you happen to collect a few gold coins along the way, even better for you.

Controls in 1337 & Senri’s game prove simple to understand, even if that simplicity can be your undoing in later levels. There’s only two control options, one involving the touchscreen capability of your smartphone or tablet (this version is what was used for this review) or you can change it to virtual buttons on your screen. The former allows you to use your left thumb to swipe back and forth and move Leo forward and backward. Using your right thumb will grant Leo the ability to jump and inflate his body or deflate back down to the ground. You’ll likely find this method of control to be intuitive while you’re avoiding deadly spikes or never-ending pits.
