‘Assassin’s Creed: Unity’ a gorgeous, frustrating battle through revolutionary Paris

“Assassin’s Creed: Unity” is stunning, truly. The visual aspect, utilizing next-generation console specs (the PS4 in my case), is a sight to behold, especially as you take leaps of faith off Parisian icons to perform double assassinations or storm the Bastille to recover stolen artifacts. When everything goes smoothly, “Unity” is a treat of a great.

But everything doesn’t go smoothly in “Unity.” If you’ve ever played an “Assassin’s Creed” game before, you’re well aware of the disgustingly consistent feature of your character not wanting to do what you tell him to, such as not parrying when you really need to not be stabbed by Parisian royal guards or jumping off a really tall building straight to your death. Want to try getting into cover? Ha! Good luck with that.

“Unity,” despite being the first release of the series for the latest consoles, does little to improve upon such longstanding issues, which makes them even worse because of how beautiful this game could have been otherwise. It’s one thing to have your character be slightly unresponsive in an otherwise forgettable landscape. But this masterpiece re-creation of Paris deserves a hero (or anti-hero, depending how you look at it) who can actually not run into walls all the time.
