Wachowskis fail to impress with latest creation
It’s about halfway through its two-hour runtime of “Jupiter Ascending.” Paying attention to the movie on the screen has become evermore chore-like. So, when two people down in front got up and left together, it was noticeable. What was more noteworthy, however, was that they never came back.
If only I were so lucky.
But I wasn’t. Instead, I sat there, slack-jawed and glassy-eyed, watching the credits roll before me, trying to comprehend what just happened. It wasn’t so much that the premise of “Jupiter Ascending,” the latest failed experiment by Andy and Lana Wachowski (the directorial and creative team behind “The Matrix” saga), was difficult to understand. For a movie about intergalactic dynasties, star-crossed lovers, familial backstabbing and enough scheming to populate any Shakespeare play, “Jupiter Ascending” has an interesting enough plot structure. The issue here is its delivery. Known for their grand spectacles, the Wachowskis have a taste for the bold that rarely pays dividends, the perfect example being “Jupiter.” In effect, they like to watch the world burn for no particular reason.
