Opening Friday:
“The Neon Demon” (R): Elle Fanning is an aspiring model who moves to L.A. and falls in with a bad crowd in director Nicolas Winding Refn’s blood-soaked thriller.
“Independence Day: Resurgence” (PG-13): The hostile aliens who tried to conquer our planet in 1996 are back, presumably after installing computer virus software. Liam Hemsworth takes over for Will Smith, who apparently decided once was enough.
“The Shallows” (PG-13): A surfer (Blake Lively) is stranded on a small outcropping of rock, just 200 yards of ocean and a great white shark between her and the shore.
“De Palma” (R): This documentary, directed by Jake Paltrow and Noah Baumbach, is a feature-length conversation with director Brian De Palma (“Scarface,” “Carrie,” “Dressed to Kill”) that spans his entire career.

“Midnight Special” (DVD/Blu-ray): Director Jeff Nichols’ foray into sci-fi stars Michael Shannon trying to protect his young son from would-be kidnappers.
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” (DVD/Blu-ray): Nia Vardalos and John Corbett return for more nuptial hijinks.
