‘The Last of Us’ Season 2, Episode 3 recap: Welcome to Seattle

Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Season 2, streaming now on Max.

By the end of the third episode of “The Last of Us” Season 2, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) has arrived in Seattle. But it has nothing to do with getting revenge against Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) for killing Joel (Pedro Pascal) in the last episode, obviously! She even has a whole speech about it: “It’s not about revenge. I want justice,” she intones to a crowded room of Jacksonites, still suffering from the devastating infected attack the episode prior. She just wants to protect her people, you see, and if that means tracking down a vaguely dangerous group that killed her surrogate father, then so be it.

It’s a lie, of course (even the resident psychotherapist said so), made all the more obvious not five minutes later when she promptly declares that her whole plan is to, and I quote, “Go to Seattle and kill Abby.”

And that’s the heart of the matter, isn’t it? Neither in the show nor the video game it’s adapting does Ellie ever actually care about justice. Not when she’s waking up from nightmares of seeing Joel murdered, not when she’s still grieving that the last time she saw him before his death they were on the outs. She wants her revenge, and it doesn’t matter the cost, the lies, the ruined relationship along the way — she’s going to get it. (And if that sounds a little too much like Abby’s MO, well …)
