‘Sync’ review: ‘On the ground, nerds!’

Who knew YouTube could bring this to the table?

—    Critic’s pick

Odd words for a movie made by nerds for nerds. (Yes, the former nerds have an affinity for guns while the latter tend to have a penchant for ridiculous graphics.) But “Sync” is just odd enough to pull it off.

“Sync,” a movie comprising a series of Webisodes first posted on YouTube, started out simple enough. Hosted by Bammo and directed by CorridorDigital, both fairly popular YouTube channels, it’s a 12-part series detailing the world’s first “digital” human, who just happens to be a covert agent. And to top that off, this conflicted agent is at odds with how to deal with his personal life (odd that what amounts to a walking cloud system has a personal life) while his professional life interferes at every turn. (Or auto-syncs. Or decapitations. Or ominous singularities running amok.)

The story, for its worth, isn’t awful. It’s the type you might enjoy watching on the SyFy channel on a boring Sunday afternoon. It’s cliched and overreaching, while at times not giving enough background for us to know why the world is the way it is now. But this isn’t, nor should it have been, the straightest of plot arcs.

It’s the not-far-off future: far enough that the government is capable of creating a computerized human with a distinctly cloud-like backup system (there’s a strange “Source Code” vibe to it), but a still familiar surrounding. (Hey, C++ is still around.) We’re quickly introduced to our star, Charlie Cooper (Tanner Thomason), a merger between human and digital A.I. Capable of downloading his consciousness into a giant server (now you see the cloud references) and then syncing it into a copy of his “shell” (former body), Charlie serves as the perfect agent: Not really alive to kill or interrogate, but not some horrific creation straight from “Terminator.” In effect, he’s an immortal crime fighter.

Well, kind of immortal.

The problems rev up when we meet Yoshi (Krista Marie Yu), an unknown Chinese prodigy in the field of computer coding. Fluent in 11 programming languages (two of which she invented herself), she’s capable of amazing feats, including the major plot angle. When she inadvertently hacks into the same supercomputer that runs Charlie’s core program, she unleashes what’s known as a technological singularity, or an emergence of a superintelligence through technological means.

The story moves forward from here, where Charlie races against time to prevent the singularity from spreading to the point of breaking through his server’s firewalls (at which point the singularity would absorb him) while tracking down Yoshi among China’s 2.3 billion residents while fighting to maintain his relationship with girlfriend Reese (Lauren Plaxco). Not to mention that Charlie’s superiors, Barney Griggs (Jude Lanston) and Eleanor Delaney (Cooper Harris), have received direct orders to shut him down. Oh, and there’s the crazy messiah-wannabe John Wyatt (Jai Coutrae), who wants to greet the singularity as an ambassador of sorts and needs Charlie’s programming to accomplish this. Yeah, it’s bedlam all around.

“Sync,” in conception, is something you would expect to find on YouTube. But it’s greater than the sum of its part. What it lacks in writing skill (and dear lord does it fail hard sometimes; those one-liners Charlie throws out are ridiculous), it makes up for in digital skill, pacing and ingenuity. And it has to be mentioned again that it was directed by YouTube content creators. It’s impressive, given what could have only been a shoestring budget and limited resources. That’s not meant to diminish the final product: As stated earlier, this is something you would find on TV, easily.

And, it’s free to watch. Like, legally free. In fact, the video at the top of this post is the full video. Enjoy.

Four body-swapping stars out of five, and a critic’s pick.
