‘The Wolf Among Us: Episode 5 – Cry Wolf’ (2014) review: Beautiful shades of gray

‘Cry Wolf’ a heart-pounding, poignant conclusion to amazing series

Somehow, in most games, it’s easy to discern what choices matter and which don’t. It’s simple to understand that saying one thing rather another may net a different reaction, but not necessarily change the situation. But sometimes, every decision you make matters, with every choice you settle on means altering your path, changing the outcome. Such is the beauty that is “Cry Wolf,” the fifth and final episode of Telltale’s “The Wolf Among Us.”

Disturbingly violent yet peacefully ambiguous in its conclusion, “Cry Wolf” neatly wraps up its strange, engrossing tale of murder, mystery and mayhem. Solidly answering questions many of its players harbored from Episode 1, “Cry Wolf” takes us on a thrilling ride from the Crooked Man’s lair to a heart-pounding car chase to a cutthroat battle with Bloody Mary to a tense confrontation in front of the Witching Well. And at every locale, more of the powerful story begins to piece together, letting us in on some devilish secrets and twisted machinations. All of this while still embracing its noir roots and storytelling-based sensibilities.

Right from the outset, we find protagonist Bigby Wolf in a dire situation, surrounding by the Crooked Man and his less-than-reputable crew. Chaos, long a staple of “The Wolf Among Us,” quickly rains down on us, and it never abates. But this isn’t action or violence for the sake of shock; these intense, bloody scenes grant us a release, to prove to the world just who exactly the Big Bad Wolf truly is. It’s an answer to every brawl we’ve been in during the past five episodes, every broken bone, every gunshot wound. What matters in all this gore is that it justifies (at least to some) what we’ve been doing in this game: to bring justice to Fabletown.
